P.S.H.E. / Relationships Education

Phoenix Infants uses Jigsaw to deliver its PSHE curriculum.

Jigsaw is an award-winning, mindful approach to PSHE. It holds children at its heart and aims to equip them for happy, healthy lives and to be effective learners.

Intent

At Phoenix Infant Academy, PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic) is a focal part of our curriculum. Through a broad and balanced curriculum that meets the context of our school, we equip children with the tools to become citizens now and in their future roles within a community.

We encourage big conversations, whilst teaching children to respect and understand each other’s rights and beliefs. The curriculum promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils, preparing them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences for later life. We teach positive relationships and strategies on how to manage conflict.

We aim to enable children to develop a deepening knowledge of their health and well-being, including their mental and physical health, and develop key character skills, including decision-making, informed risk-taking, good communication, and self-regulation strategies.

Our curriculum prepares children for an ever-changing world and to have aspirations for themselves and others.

Implementation

“Jigsaw offers a comprehensive programme for Primary PSHE, including statutory Relationships and Health Education, in a spiral, progressive and fully planned scheme of work, giving children relevant learning experiences to help them navigate their world and to develop positive relationships with themselves and others.”

The PSHE Curriculum is taught through discussion, role plays and relatable real-life examples and/or experiences. There is no expectation that children complete formal written work, although some form of recording is encouraged. Where applicable, children’s experiences, work or comments are recorded in a floor book. These capture children’s understanding and learning of the topic.

The PSHE Curriculum has been split into six key themes: Being Me in My World, Celebrating Difference, Dreams and Goals, Healthy Me, Relationships and Changing Me. Topics are revisited across year groups so understanding is deepened. This allows for progression and retention of key skills and knowledge, and also the introduction of new concepts at an age-appropriate point.

Some PSHE topics are taught within other subjects, especially Computing, Maths and Science, for example the teaching of e-safety within Computing lessons.

Impact

The impact of a robust PSHE education is life-long. It prepares children for the future, enabling them to face any challenges life presents with perseverance and determination.

We measure the impact through pupil voice, lessons captured in floor books and informal lesson observations.

At Phoenix Infant Academy, our pupils will:

  • Become confident, informed and responsible citizens.
  • Reflect on their experiences and understand how they are developing personally and socially.
  • Understand and respect diversity and difference.
  • Have high aspirations
  • Leave us prepared for life in an ever-changing modern Britain. They will have the tools they need to succeed, keep themselves safe and thrive.
