Celebrating Phoenix's diversity!

Intent

Our RE curriculum is designed to equip all children with the knowledge and cultural capital to succeed in life. It provides the foundation for all children to gain essential knowledge about world religions so that they are well informed citizens ready for the real world. Through accessible, high quality RE teaching and strong links with our local community, all children will develop a wide range of skills including enquiry, interpretation, evaluation and reflection. Pupils are encouraged to participate in discussions and explore their own ideas and beliefs in a classroom environment where they feel heard, respected and understood.

Implementation

We believe that it is important for all our pupils to learn from and about religion, so that they can understand the world around them. The aim of Religious Education in our school is to help children acquire and develop knowledge and understanding of Christianity and other principal religions represented in Great Britain; Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism, Judaism and Buddhism.

Our curriculum enables pupils to relate to a way of life that is different from their own, by introducing them to material from religious traditions and helping them to connect it with their own personal knowledge and experience. It follows a ‘spiral’ curriculum where pupils revisit core concepts through the theme of ‘Celebrations’ as they move through school.

The curriculum is adapted to ensure it is accessible to all pupils and units are brought to life through first hand experiences such as visits to local places of worship, as well as inviting guest visitors (including members of staff). We aim for these experiences to enhance each child’s spiritual, moral , social and cultural development and deepen their experience and understanding of different faiths.

Parents are invited to our termly curriculum celebrations where not only are children’s work and progress celebrated, but also the strong bond between teacher, parent and child which we believe is central to the learning and well-being of the children here at Phoenix Infant School.

Through such projects as 'Harvest' (Year 1) and 'Jumu'ah' (Year 2), skills and knowledge including expressing ideas sensitively and exploring questions surrounding faith, are taught and revisited.

experiential learning

We pride ourselves on the experiences and provision we offer our children which provide them with further opportunities to consider those 'big questions' regarding faith and religion. This includes external visits from faith leaders, cross-curricular opportunities, visits to local places of worship and internal celebrations.
